Expanding Global Collaboration: Why EU|BICs Outside of EU27 Should Join the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) as International Network Partners

Back to all posts
EU|BICs (European Business and Innovation Centres) are crucial to driving regional economic development and innovation in today’s interconnected world. Certified as centres of excellence, EU|BICs support the growth of startups, SMEs, and innovative ventures. However, for EU|BICs outside the EU-27 territory, there is a significant and often underutilised opportunity to enhance further their global reach and impact: joining the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) as International Network Partners (INP).

EEN, EBN and EU|BIC: Expanding Global Collaboration and Innovation Networks

The EEN, supported by the European Commission, is the world’s largest network supporting SMEs with international ambitions, connecting over 60 countries. For EU|BICs outside the EU-27, joining the EEN as International Network Partners opens up a vast range of opportunities. These include access to European markets, funding, research partnerships, and innovative business opportunities.

Why Should EU|BICs Outside of EU-27 Join EEN as INPs?

  1. Strengthening Cross-Border Collaboration: By joining EEN, EU|BICs can forge collaborations with European companies, research institutions, and innovation hubs, expanding their services beyond local regions and helping local businesses thrive globally.
  2. Access to European Expertise and Funding: EEN facilitates access to European funding programs like Horizon Europe and the European Innovation Council (EIC). This enables EU|BICs to connect their clients to funding and technical expertise available through European institutions.
  3. Supporting Internationalisation Efforts: For EU|BICs, joining EEN provides a platform to enhance the internationalisation services they offer, helping startups and SMEs gain a foothold in new global markets.
  4. Building Strong Innovation Ecosystems: Becoming an EEN INP allows EU|BICs to play a pivotal role in building and strengthening innovation ecosystems. This aligns with the goals of the EU|BIC Innovation Ecosystem Framework, which advocates for interconnected ecosystems that address global and local challenges collaboratively.

Steps to Apply to Become an EEN International Network Partner

If your EU|BIC is interested in joining the EEN as an International Network Partner, follow these steps to express your interest:

  1. Review the Brochure: Start by reviewing the EEN International Network Partner brochure. Pay close attention to the annexe, which outlines the terms of reference for the open invitation. Make sure the priorities of the EEN align with your organisation’s goals and explore potential synergies.
  2. Pitch the Benefits: Present the potential benefits of joining the EEN to your organisation’s leadership, including executive management, department heads, or president, to discuss the prospects of joining the network.
  3. Identify Potential Partners: Reach out to potential partners in your region or country to ensure comprehensive coverage of all EEN services and activities, which will strengthen your application.
  4. Seek Support from the EU Delegation: Contact the EU Delegation in your region to request an official letter of support, an important part of the application process.
  5. Consult National Policymakers: Engage with national policymakers and funding authorities to determine whether your organisation qualifies for financial support. Alternatively, develop a sustainable business model to demonstrate your financial capacity to participate in the EEN.
  6. Submit an Official Application: Fill in the official EEN online form, highlighting your operational capacity, staff expertise, and the benefits of your involvement in the network.
  7. Wait for Feedback: After submission, the EEN will review your application and provide feedback within 1-2 months. In some cases, they may invite your organisation for an online interview to clarify details.
  8. Sign the Cooperation Agreement: If accepted, you will sign a ‘Cooperation Agreement’ outlining the terms of your participation and collaboration with the EEN.

Becoming an EEN International Network Partner is a strategic opportunity for EU|BICs outside the EU-27 to expand their international reach, enhance collaboration with European innovation networks, and provide greater value to their local businesses.
