Dr. Fotis E. Psomopoulos (Young Researcher) (male) is an Academic Fellow at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a Team Leader on Bioinformatics at the Information Processing Lab (IPL) in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of AUTH.

He has obtained his doctorate and engineering diploma from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in 2010 and 2004 respectively. Since 2005, he has been working on European projects as a Research Fellow at the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), initially at the Information Technologies Institute (ITI) and then at the Institute of Applied Biosciences (INAB). Moreover, since 2004 he has been working as a Teaching Assistant for courses in the same Department and, during the academic year 2011-2012, as an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Western Macedonia. His research interests are mainly focused on Bioinformatics, Phylogenetic Profiles and System biology, Data Mining techniques for knowledge extraction in proteomics and High Performance Computing and Grid Computing among others. Since 2013, he has been selected as an EGI (European Grid Infrastructure) Champion for Bioinformatics.

His research interests lay across three major pillars; (a) Bioinformatics and the evolutionary analysis of genomes based on their protein data, (b) data mining methods and techniques in order to analyze the vast amount of data involved, and (c) Grid Computing in order to ensure the necessary computational power and to optimize the developed methods for large-scale approaches. His expertise at the intersection of Bioinformatics and Grid Computing allows him a unique insight into the specific requirements and bottlenecks expected in large scale computational approaches in Life Sciences.
