Colin Burns is the Chief Design Officer for BBC Design & Engineering. He leads the User Experience & Design team that is responsible for the UX and Service Design of the BBC's key online products and the delivery systems that underpin them.
His work has focused on the use of Design Thinking to provide organisations with Design, Innovation and Transformation strategies. He helps people and teams make the most of their creative resources.
Prior to joining the BBC, Colin was Global Head of Interaction Design at IDEO, Managing Director of IDEO London, Group Director at Elmwood Brand Design, and worked as an independent creative consultant through his own agency, Martach.
He is an expert design leader and facilitator of creative working approaches and honorary Professor of Design at Dundee University and Glasgow School of Art.
He worked as a Director of Elmwood Brand Design between 2010 and 2012, with management and client responsibilities across the UK business.
He previously worked for 7 years as an independent creative consultant through his one-man agency, Martach, and a network of associates.
Colin spent much of his career working at IDEO – the international design consultancy, famous for it’s user-centred, interdisciplinary approach. During his 10 years at IDEO he worked in California and Germany, as well as the UK. He held posts during this time as IDEO’s Global Head of Interaction Design and the Head of IDEO London.
Colin led a project team at Interval Research in Palo Alto for 2 years. He was a founder of Public Service Design Agency, Participle.
He is a visiting Professor of Design at Dundee University and at Glasgow School of Art.
He studied Industrial Design at Napier University and the Royal College of Art.
