The Clean Futures Accelerator brings together the world-class research, facilities and expertise of Coventry University, BCIMO, and Connected Places Catapult to support SMEs in the transport sector as they develop and scale sustainable technologies.
Clean Futures is part of the West Midlands Innovation Accelerator, delivered in partnership with the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology, Innovate UK, and the West Midlands Combined Authority. Launched in 2023, the programme supports the West Midlands’ transport sector to be at the heart of the green industrial revolution. To date, Clean Futures has supported 39 SMEs through a 6-month programme, offering up to £50k for innovative solutions in very light rail and automotive manufacturing. The programme also provides tailored technical and commercial support and networking events.

The programme was necessary to address the urgent need for a green transition in the UK’s transport sector, particularly in the West Midlands. The region required support to move away from fossil fuels and adopt clean technology solutions to reduce carbon emissions and improve sustainability.

- Economic: 57 full time jobs created, £129m secured in co-investment.
- Social: 40+ events held, facilitating over 1500 networking opportunities and 130+ formal business and investor introductions.
- Innovation: 39 businesses supported in clean-tech development trials.

Cofounder of Global Nano Network, scientist and environmental champion Sindy Chaves from Costa Rica is now based in Coventry, developing an industrial coating for electric vehicle batteries to extend their life. Earlier this year, the company took part in the Clean Futures Accelerator, receiving £50,000 and a business support package to help the firm create a digital twin of its manufacturing process.
We’ve been introduced to a large network and welcomed lots of people to our facility to see what we do, including representatives from Coventry City Council. Now our name is known, we are exposed to people who can help us, make a difference, or introduce us to potential investors.
